"The work you’re doing on a Northern Virginia RHIO is critical not just on an individual level, but for society as a whole. This is important and I thank you. "
GMU President Alan Merten at the first NOVA RHIO Open Forum May 5, 2006

At the October 18 meeting, we discussed the request from Jane Woods that our committee develop contact lists for potential outreach targets (dependent on what the Steering Committee selects as the focus of the NoVA RHIO project).  We should not contact any outreach targets at this point, but we should make efforts to determine the specific people and their phone, e-mail and business mailing addresses and assemble as comprehensive a list as possible for later use.

Various meeting participants agreed to serve as point people for creating or securing such contact lists in the various sectors identified at our October 6 meeting.  If you are not the designated point person but you may have information to add or suggestions to offer, please contact the point person directly or through me.  In a couple of cases, the meeting participants believed people not in attendance would want to be the point person so I have listed them accordingly but they are welcome to contact me to decline the nomination in absentia.  Here then are the sectors and point people:

  • retirement communities- -Judy Crux
  • large employers (e.g. universities, local governments, school systems) – Anne Rosenblum
  • Chambers of Commerce – Anne Rosenblum
  • medical societies – JoAnn Allen
  • phamacists – Susan Khorsand
  • health care providers (e.g. hospitals, outpatient health clinics, medical labs, hospice, home health, adult day, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities) – Pam Cole/Diane Downing
  • faith based organizations/denominational umbrella groups – Judy Crux/Susan Khorsand
  • HMOs/Insurance  - Tracey White
  • consumer and advocacy groups (e.g. Alzheimer's, Cancer, Lung, etc.) – Ian Kremer
  • unions (e.g. AFSCME, SEIU, AFLCIO) – Ian Kremer
  • think tanks (e.g. Families USA) – Diane Downing
  • public safety agencies (e.g. first responders) – Diane Downing/Pam Cole
  • school systems (e.g. student health services if this would fit with the chosen project) - ?
  • media, health reporters – Anne Rosenblum/Alan Fogg

Additionally, meeting participants agreed that it would be valuable in promoting the chosen NoVA RHIO project to have the public support of relevant public officials who possess both a substantial interest in the project's goals and sufficient public reputation or connections in the project's goal area or target audience as to help attract attention and credibility (and, potentially, financial resources).  It is not necessary to determine which public officials to contact at this point though, depending on the project, examples might include state senator Janet Howell if there were significant consumer privacy issues and/or Congressman Tom Davis if there were major technology and/or federal workforce issues.

Anne Rosenblum agreed to look into whether there is a central clearinghouse (e.g. federal HHS or otherwise) on RHIO projects that may serve as a source of sample education/communication plans.  Pam Cole agreed to draft some general introductory talking points about RHIOs and the NoVA RHIO effort.  Anne Rosenblum also agreed to seek from Janet Palmisano a complete contact list for all those who have previously attended or been invited to attend any of the NoVA RHIO meetings.

The Committee's next meeting will be at 7:30 am on Wednesday, November 16 on the GMU campus in Fairfax; I will follow up with a building and room asap.
